The Undeniable Magic of Self-Compassion

Updated: Apr 11, 2021

Grief is a fireball of emotions that opens itself up within you, festering and burning bright with a constant incandescent glow. Fear, anger, sadness, guilt... The list goes on. Undeniably, grief can really take a toll on you by default, so it is extremely important to practice self-compassion.

"Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we’ll ever do." - Brené Brown

It is so important to continue doing things that you enjoy: you are still deserving of happiness and enjoyment in your life, and such practices can ease the pain and stress of grief.

Unconditional Positive Regard

No matter what is going on in your life, offer yourself complete acceptance and love. This is such an important thing to do. The grieving process can usually be a time where one begins to question their self-worth. Even though you might feel ridiculous in the beginning, say at least one positive thing about yourself in the mirror every day. We are often too far judgemental about ourselves and when grieving, this practice can increase. Try placing no judgments or “conditions” on the acceptance of yourself or turn those judgements into positive comments. Through this practice, you may find it easier to move through your grief and eventually bounce back from its darkest depths.

Mindfulness

Try practising mindfulness every day. This can be through small acts, such as thinking about something you might feel grateful for or acknowledging what you are feeling and finding ways to deal with it (such as searching for help from a counselling group). Notice and accept your feelings and thoughts as they are, instead of judging them or exaggerating them. The acceptance of your pain or suffering is a powerful thing and that is the first step in growth and finding support.

Recreation

Practise activities that you've always loved, whether it's going on a run, cooking, reading, sewing, or hiking. Doing such activities can increase your mood automatically and release endorphins (the happy hormone). Make sure you take care of yourself, eating regularly, take a long bath, go for a walk, and reach out to others when you feel like you need some support or just some company.
