Losing someone changes you. When I lost my dad, my outlook on life and death had changed and had taught me some valuable lessons.
1. Life is short
When I lost my dad, I truly understood how fast time flies, and how precious every moment is. Although it is hard to appreciate and enjoy every moment in life, I have definitely learned to appreciate and love my life more. Furthermore, I've learned to focus on what's more important and valuable in life. Before, I would find my day ruined by something like losing an expensive pair of sunglasses, but I have come to realise that things like that are not so important, and even though I would still be a little upset or annoyed over something like that- I have learnt to let things like this go more easily.
2. Treat everyone with kindness
It might just be a bad day, or maybe that person has lost someone or had gotten into an argument earlier that day... Everyone is going through their own personal battles, and being kind to people really can have a positive effect on their day. After going through something so difficult, I realised the great importance and effect that kindness has- sometimes we just forget to be kind and considerate to others, especially when we are so preoccupied with ourselves.
3. Appreciate the people around you
After losing someone, you realise more than ever, how much you appreciate and love your friends and family. Now, I find myself trying to spend more time with my friends and family, talk to them more and just do little kind things here and there to let them know how much I love them.
4. Enjoy the small things
I've learnt to appreciate little things like going for a walk with my mum, shopping with my friends, talking to my brother for a few minutes on the phone... It's all the little things that also mean a lot in life, and I've realised how much I missed the little things I did with my dad like helping him cook or watching TV together.
5. Do what you love
Our time on this earth is limited, and although there are many unavoidable things that we have to do (even if we don't like them), life is too short to not follow your dreams or do what you want sometimes. We can't always please others, especially when it comes to decisions that will affect your own life.
